INFO
WHERE AM I?
welcome to UMDCORE, a digital archive of hardcore music at the University of Maryland. this site archives flyers, videos, images, and assorted personal histories from the mid '90s onward.
WHO ARE YOU?
i'm Ash (they/them), i'm a junior journalism major with a passion for music and local history! you can check out my personal site here or follow me on instagram here. i'm 20 years old, i love powerviolence & grindcore, i'm from Wheaton, MD and my favorite color is orange. nice to meet you.
WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?
i love hardcore music. there is still a hardcore community at UMD and in College Park, but it's smaller and more fragmented compared to its heyday ~25 years ago. maintaining an archive of old shows will hopefully inspire newgens like me to keep it going. not that this isn't also for the oldheads! these shows rocked and there's value in preserving that memory.
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?
well, stick around, obviously. if you have flyers, stories, videos, recordings or anything else, please email me here.
FAQ
- if i have something to share, how do i submit it?
EMAIL ME! i will entertain any and all submissions, so if you've got a flyer, a video, a picture or a story please let me know.
- why don't you post flyers from before '97?
i haven't found any online and i don't expect to; more importantly, there is already a far better collection of older punk flyers from around College Park at the University of Maryland Special Collections in Performing Arts. you can find the entire digital exhibiton here and the flyer and zine collection here.
- how do you find flyers?
search skills and lots of free time. i list my sources on the flyers page but i'll reiterate here: Hardcore Show Flyers is an impeccable resource. it's one giant google drive folder you can download for yourself with flyers organized by year, country and state.
- how do you find videos?
literally just keyword searching on YouTube, especially things like "live UMD", "live WMUC", and "live St. Andrew's". you can view the full playlist here, which includes videos up to the current day.
- how do you find photos?
i've really struggled on the photos front, to be honest. everything currently listed in the photos tab is from Flickr, where tag searching resulted in a couple nice WMUC finds but not much else. i know plenty of great photographers have passed through UMD and there's definitely stuff up on Instagram that i haven't tracked down yet; forgive me, but the IG search function is incredibly lackluster. if you have anything to share, please send it here.
- what's up with the "you" tab?
that's where i'm keeping everything else i find, essentially. interviews i've conducted, social media hearsay, bills from Concertarchives that i haven't found flyers for and a few archived websites.
- isn't there still a scene at UMD?
well, yes, but it's small. shows on campus are sparse outside of WMUC's Third Rail series, which doesn't feature many hardcore bands. lots of hardcore heads associate with Metalheads of Maryland, UMD's only club for extreme music fans. current student bands include mathcore three-piece Underserene and hardcore outfit Slag Dump.
